Percy Grainger and his contemporaries

Christopher Guild, piano

Saturday 9 May, 11.30am

St Mary de Crypt, Southgate Street, Gloucester

Our May coffee concert explores the vivid and distinctive musical world of Percy Grainger and those around him, brought to life by pianist Christopher Guild.

Grainger’s music is full of colour, energy and imagination, drawing on folk traditions and reshaping them in his own unmistakable voice. Alongside this, the programme includes works by Ronald Stevenson, whose writing reflects and reimagines Grainger’s legacy, as well as music by Henry Balfour Gardiner.

From the lyrical and atmospheric Michaelchurch to the brilliant virtuosity of Stevenson’s Gardineriana Rhapsody, this is a programme rich in character and contrast. The Chinese Folksong Suite offers moments of delicacy and reflection, while Green Bushes brings the concert to a powerful and expressive close.

Join us for a relaxed and engaging morning of beautifully crafted music in the welcoming surroundings of St Mary de Crypt.

Free entry, with donations invited to support the concert series and the church. Refreshments available.
