I have been singing countertenor for nearly twenty years now. I read English Literature at Bristol University and have sustained an interest, especially in poetry, Shakespeare, musical settings of poetry and other literature. I am better at collecting books than reading them, but writing and researching for our various musical projects gives me focus. I particularly enjoy devising programmes of words and music based around an historical narrative. I was a city councillor in Gloucester for nine years, culminating in a year as Mayor in 2015/16. I am able to talk and work constructively with politicians on all sides, and believe in positivity whenever possible. Gloucester has a fantastic future, as well as a past to be proud of. As a singer I have performed with choral societies across the country, have sung solos on BBC Radio 3 and in the Royal Albert Hall, and am a member of several ensembles including The Proteus Ensemble, Aldwyn Voices and The John S Davies Singers.
As a solo soprano I am active in the South West region. I enjoy performing many types of music, equally at home in baroque as in modern. Having graduated with a BA Honors in Humanites with Music from the Open University, I am strongly in favour of adult learning. I have built up a strong reputation as a vocal animateur, training choirs and running vocal workshops. I ran the Gloucester Cathedral Junior Choir for 12 years, ran workshops for Choir Schools Association and managed the Cathedral’s outreach programme. I have directed choirs and appeared as a soloist in the Three Choirs Festival, and as a consort singer I perform regularly with several vocal ensembles including The Proteus Ensemble, Aldwyn Voices and The John S Davies Singers.
I am Musical Director of the Ecclesiastical Insurance Staff Choir who give an annual carol concert in Gloucester Cathedral and other charity concerts. I also direct the Malaika Choir, helping to raise money and awareness for education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Malaika choir have worked with several artists including Vonda Sheppard and Fairport Convention, with whom I sang a solo in their recent concert.
I have also directed choirs in many local projects such as WarSongs with George Moorey, and the Cathedral Junior Choir in Tobias and the Angel for English Touring Opera.
